The demographic dimensions of poverty in Jordan
Worzala, Chantal
The economy of Jordan suffered internal and external shocks in the late 1980s and the early 1990s as oil prices, the regional economy slowed, and the Gulf Crisis resulted in a sudden influx of economic migrants returning to Jordan from neighboring countries. These stresses on the economy increased the government's interest in the extent of poverty in the country and the alternatives for poverty alleviation. One important factor in the poverty equation is population growth and structure. Based on population projections, fertility survey, this paper presents a demographic profile of Jordan and draws out the implication of fertility, mortality and migration patterns for poverty alleviation efforts.
