Republic of Yemen - Health sector review

The main purpose of this review is to assess the present state of the health sector, and to review major issues and possible policy options. Emphasis is given to primary health care and its principal components as the most effective way to improve the general health status of people, and to tackle one of the major factors contributing to poverty at its source. The report also highlights two other key issues: population policy which is just emerging as a major element of the Government's development strategy, and the crucial role that women can play in the health sector. The findings of this review could assist the Government in designing an effective health sector strategy for the future which overcomes present weaknesses in the system and focuses on areas that have been neglected in the past.
