The Uttar Pradesh State Roads Project will involve substantial earthworks to incorporate widened pavements and shoulders. This Environmental Impact Assessment (EA) will assess the impact of the project on the environment and discuss the mitigation measures to alleviate such impact. Problems from displaced soil will be mitigated by avoiding borrow pits on agricultural lands and by using topsoil for filling tree pits. Soil erosion in slopes will be prevented by turfing them with grass and shrubs. Brick pitching and stone pitching will be used for different embankment slopes. Soil contamination from fuels and lubricants be avoided by keeping fuel storage and refueling sites away from drainage channels and water bodies. Construction wastes will be dumped in selected pits developed on unfertile land. Water contamination will be mitigated by making the road runoff pass through oil and grease traps. Drainage will be improved by building additional culverts on each route. Silt fencing will be built in the proximity of water bodies. Water contamination will be avoided by building settling ponds and installation of oil interceptors. Air pollution will be mitigated by spraying water regularly at earthworks. Pollution control equipment will be installed at the stack of hot mix plant. The noise level will be controlled by restricting the time of construction activities. The monitoring of effectiveness of pollution attenuating measures will be taken thrice during operation.
