Gapasin, Dely P. | Mabesa, Virginia | Merril-Sands, Deborah | Brush, Edwin
This paper was prepared as part of a larger case study on women scientists, and managers in agricultural research in the Philippines. The international agricultural research centers (IARCs) supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), are aiming at strengthening their strategies, and mechanisms to effectively tap into, this changing pool of scientists world-wide, and, in assuring that recruitment efforts reach both men, and women in international labor markets. This paper attempts to facilitate IARCs in their efforts to recruit women scientists, focusing on the Philippines, where an estimated 800-1000 women comprise nearly fifty percent of the scientists, and professional staff working in the public sector, national agricultural research system. To assist in these efforts, the International Service for National Agricultural Research (ISNAR) compiled information on women scientists in the country, and the paper analyzes the degree to which the country represents a potential pool of qualified women scientist for the international centers, and includes the awareness of job opportunities, mobility concerns, and language requirements. It is recommended to directly reach key research institutes; to tap both the formal, and informal networks of women scientists; and, disseminate information through professional societies, and the media.
