Systems analysis of rural transportation
DE LUCIA, R. | GOTSCH, C. | ROGERS, P.
A systems analysis study of rural transportation in order to develop techniques for measuring the economic impact of alternative transport system investments (different feeder road grids) is discussed. The focus of the examples is the SCARP 1 project area in West Pakistan, but the analysis has general application. The movement of commodities from farm to market is primarily an agricultural activity. A series of models were developed to measure the benefits from resource savings, increases in output, or changes in cropping patterns that result from various improvements in pricing or technology in the transportation system. These mathematical models capture the pertinent characteristics of the average users of the system in a Pakistani "mandi town," a market town with official government weights and measures. These investigations demonstrated the versatility of such models in analyzing rural economic problems. Statistical data are included.
