Nigeria - Second National Fadama Development - Critical Ecosystem Management Project : envoronmental assessment
Soubbotin,Nikolai
The Nigeria - Second National Fadama Development Project aims at the development of small-scale irrigation in the flood-prone, low-laying alluvial floodplains or Fadama. The report evaluated impact which includes : air pollution; natural habitat loss, wildlife loss; Soil erosion; salinization; water-borne diseases; malaria carrying mosquitoes; reduction of groundwater and / or surface water; surface water contamination; worker illness; impaired health of fertilizer and pesticides handlers; contamination from machine fuels and lubricants. As a result of these impacts the project developed an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment, which includes mitigation measures, as follows : introduction of an integrated pest management program (IPM); adopt organic cultivation farming techniques; fertilizer application in conjunction with crop rotation practices; training in handling and use of pesticides; use of appropriate pesticides that do not have residuals or in which residuals do no harm consumers; handling of manure to confined quarters to avoid runoff waters leading to poor water quality; agricultural machinery will be kept in good repair and fuels and lubricants stored and handled in appropriately designed areas; ensure market center includes proper toilet facilities for public use; strengthen veterinary services and farmers education through extension services; crop residues should be incorporated into the soil and organic manure applied to improve the water holding capacity and soil fertility; create opportunities for women to engage in Fadama production; and finally, organized community outreach and public awareness campaigns on education on the transmission of water related diseases and environmental management issues.
