The Azerbaijan AARP/Integrated Solid Waste Management System for Absheron Peninsula Project aims to: (i) improve the solid waste management system for the overall Absheron Peninsula in line with the national solid waste management laws and international environmental legal requirements and standards; (ii) provide solid waste collection, processing, and disposal services in districts surrounding Baku, and enhancing management of the Balakhani Landfill and three other existing open dumps; (iii) reduce public health risks and environmental damage caused by inappropriate handling of solid waste in the project area; and (iv) enhance public awareness about the importance of proper waste disposal and management. Some of the project negative impacts and corresponding mitigation measures include: (i) traffic and noise generated by vehicles and landfill equipment, partially mitigated as during operations the engine covers of generators, air compressors and other powered mechanical equipment should be closed, and equipment placed as far away from residential areas as possible; and (ii) temporary pollution of air, soil, ground and surface water, partially mitigated by keeping the surrounding environment (side walks, roads) free of debris to minimize dust.
