The objective of the Fourth Power System Development Project in India is to strengthen India's electricity transmission system in order to increase reliable power exchange between regions and states. Negative measures include: exposure to electromagnetic interference, exposure to noise, impact on water bodies and land, social inequities, loss of precious ecological values or damage to precious species, loss of agricultural productivity, disturbed farming activities. loss of vegetation and deforestation, and fire hazards. Mitigation measures include: (i) setback of dwellings to overhead line route designed in accordance with permitted level of power frequency and the regulation of supervision at sites; (ii) design of plant enclosures to comply with noise regulations; (iii) careful route selection to avoid existing settlements; avoiding encroachment by careful site and alignment selection; and use existing tower and footings wherever possible; (iv) construction activities on cropping land timed to avoid disturbance of field crops; (v) marking of vegetation to be removed prior to clearance, and strict control on clearing activities to ensure minimal clearance; (vi) trees that can survive pruning to comply should be pruned instead of cleared; and (vii) felled trees and other cleared or pruned vegetations to be disposed of as authorized by statutory bodies.
