Subbarao, K. | Mattimore, A. | Plangemann, K.
The objective of the Second Madhya Pradesh District Poverty Initiatives Project (MP-DPIP II) in India to empower the rural poor by improving their capacities and opportunities for a sustainable livelihood. Some of the negative impacts of the project are: depletion of ground water, erosion of top soil and water logging, diesel pumps may pollute air in enclosed settings and create sound pollution , depletion of unconfined aquifer and lowering of water table, contamination of ground water, water borne disease, ground water depletion, submergence of land, siltation, unhygienic condition and pollution of standing waters, loss of biodiversity, and mosquito breeding. Mitigation measures of the project are: 1) adopt irrigation practices that improve efficiency of water utilization and conserve water such as drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, mulching of soil, etc.; 2) adopt soil conservation measures - plugging, bunding, trenches, mulching of soil, and increase of vegetation cover to avoid loss of top soil by action of flowing water; 3) do not use adulterated fuel, ensure that the pump is fixed properly to the base to avoid excess vibration; 4) first test the water sample of an existing drinking water source in the vicinity to ensure it is safe; 5) provide a suitable cover over the open wells; 6) check land use of submerged land; and 7) prevent disposal of waste material and garbage into the pond/tank.
