Egypt - Alleviating poverty during structural adjustment

The main objectives of the study are to analyze the importance and causes of poverty in Egypt in the context of the present economic crisis; to assess the distributional impacts of the macroeconomic reforms envisaged under the structural adjustment program; and to outline a strategy for policy interventions to alleviate poverty, and promote broad-based growth. It addresses three major issues which critically affect the government's ability to design and implement an effective poverty alleviation strategy: i) identification of the poor; ii) employment promotion; and iii) short-term compensatory measures aimed at protecting the low income population groups likely to be directly affected during the transition period of implementation of macroeconomic reforms.
