Military expenditure and economic development : a symposium on research issues
Lamb, Geoffrey | Kallab, Valeriana [editors]
The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the problems with military expenditure data and the methodology employed by the collecting institutions. A primary objective is to identify gaps and to suggest research areas where positive changes can be made. The paper first describes the alternative definitions that have been employed and the various international sources for the data. It next deals with four major issues that need to be analyzed if a proper evaluation and use is made from the information. The paper then analyzes the use of data in the evaluation of the opportunity costs of military spending, and it concludes with suggestions for further research.
