Romania - The economy
Pursell, Garry
After repairing the war damage the socialist government embarked on a challenging development program of rapid industrialization with special emphasis on heavy industry, accompanied by institutional reform and mechanization in agriculture. To achieve these objectives great efforts were made to mobilize domestic resources for development, and to maintain a high level of capital formation. Provisions were made to assure for the population an adequate supply of essential goods and services including health care, education, and social welfare. The potential for further economic growth looks good. Maintaining the momentum of economic growth will depend upon the introduction of new industrial technologies and improved product quality, reduced production costs, more efficient economic planning, manpower training, and a rapid expansion of export earnings.
