Guidelines for the improvement of school sanitation : part 1 - from needs assessment to proposal for improvements of school sanitation and water supply (for non-drinking purposes)
Collignon, Bernard | Vezina, Marc | Snell Tesh, Suzanne [editor]
The Second Female Secondary School Assistance Project's (FSSAP II) principal environmental concerns relate to the need to ensure the provision of safe drinking water and the provision and maintenance of adequate sanitation. Nationally, it is estimated that approximately 30 percent of Shallow Tubewells (STWs) are arsenic contaminated, compared with only 1-2 percent of Deep Tubewells (DTWs). To minimize the risk of arsenic contamination, FSSAP II will not support the installation of any further STWs, but will provide DTWs for schools that do not have any safe drinking water. All tubewells must be tested for asenic contamination on installation and retested six months later, and annually thereafter. In cases where tubewells are found to be arsenic-contaminated, this project will support the provision of alternative safe drinking water. In terms of provision of maintenance of sanitation, the Guidelines for Improvement of School Sanitation should be used to help guide the design, maintenance, and use of latrines supported by the project. The Guidelines will help the School Management Committees (SMC) to determine what improvements in school sanitation are needed, and which technical options will be most suitable considering local environmental and social conditions, and the capacity of the school to operate and maintain them. Dissemination of these Guidelines will be built into the training of the SMCs and Upazila Project Officers.
