Bangladesh - Current economic performance and short-term prospects
Mitchell, Brigitta | Rakotonirina, Xavier | Ministry to the Presidency in charge of | Finance and Planning, Madagascar
Political change marked 1975 in Bangladesh, which makes it impossible to say what longer-term objectives might be. Nevertheless the fundamental problems of the country continue to be overpopulation, weak administration, inadequate infrastructure, and insufficient resources. The record of economic policy and performance in 1975/76 shows considerable improvement over previous years. Steps have been taken to improve economic management and the administration, and critical problems in the major sectors have been examined. Some improvements have been instituted, but more are needed, particularly with respect to agricultural inputs, marketing, and storage. While capacity utilization has improved in a number of industries and the supply of raw material and spares is more stable, inventories of finished goods are high. Public enterprises are still generally deficient in management and labor productivity. Also, further measures are necessary in government administration, project implementation procedures, and development priorities. The government has shown a strong willingness to discuss problems, admit failures, and take corrective action.
