Reaching out to the child : workshop on child development - a report
Easterly, William
This is a report on a workshop entitled "Reaching Out to the Child" held on February 21-22, 2000 in New Delhi. The objective of the workshop was to initiate multi-sectoral discussions across the government and non-government sectors as a first step towards establishing a constituency for the development of an integrated, comprehensive, and convergent approach to child development. This report presents the outcomes of the consultations that were held during the workshop. It begins by outlining the context of this multi-sectoral dialogue and proceeds to discuss the objectives, design, and highlights of the workshop. It then goes on to summarize the various issues of consensus and issues of debate emerging from the proceedings. The report concludes by articulating a few significant questions that need further attention. Overall, the workshop highlighted the need for further and more intensive multi-sectoral discussion across the government and non-government sectors involving, a thorough review of the design and outcomes of the existing independent, sectoral programs and services from the singular viewpoint of their common beneficiary, i.e., the child. This is expected to pave the way towards establishing a proactive constituency for the development of the much-needed integrated, comprehensive, and convergent approach to child development.
