World Bank lending for secondary school science : a general operational review
el Hage, Diane | Rinaldi, Rosemary | Ware, Sylvia | Thulstrup, Erik | Population and Human Resources Department
School science at the secondary level is generally considered important for two reasons: (i) it provides information needed by common citizens in order to understand the physical world in which they live; and (ii) it motivates and, in particular, prepares young people for studies and careers in science and science-based disciplines such as engineering, medicine agriculture, etc. In other words, secondary science attempts to prepare younger generations for those science-based private and professional applications, which in numerous ways are going to influence most aspects of their lives: health, technology, environment, and so forth. This paper investigates what kind of secondary science education the World Bank has supported during the past 30 years, and to what extent new thinking in the field during the period has influenced the work carried out under Bank projects.
