El Salvador - Feeder Roads Program and Complementary Project
Sorsa, Piritta
The Feeder Roads Program and Complementary Project for El Salvador will assist in financing additions to the coastal highway. During recent years, one of the principal objectives of El Salvador's economic development policy has been the increase and diversification of agricultural production through the opening up of new and underutilized land. The coastal area is one of the last remaining sections of unused agricultural potential. In order to take advantage of this area, the coastal highway must be expanded. The project will accomplish this goal in two parts. The first part will construct 21 feeder roads in the regions traversed by the coastal highway. The second part will consist of three complementary projects to the coastal highway. They are: 1) paving of the La Libertad-Comalapa section of the highway; 2) construction of a bridge across the Rio de Paz to connect the highway to the Pacific highway in Guatemala; and 3) extension of the coastal highway. These improvements will promote agricultural development, improve highway communication, and provide reliable road transportation.
