Water samples from baked clay jars (zeer) were examined bacteriologically (colony count, total coliform, fecal coliform and fecal streptococci). The counts were highest before alum treatment (323x103/ ml, 1400, 215 and 196/100 ml respectively). After alum treatment were 199x10/ ml, 680, 88 and 127/100 ml, then the decreasing was recorded after filteration through the porous (100x10 /ml, 380, 47, and 56/ 100 ml). The result confirmed the role of alum treatment and "zeer" in purification (partially purification) of drinking water in Egypt.
