The effect of presowing inoculation of sweet pea seeds with strains of Rhizobium leguminosarum or inoculation with two side dressing of ammonium sulfate has been studied in the nursery. It has been found that uninoculated plants were poorly nodulated. Inoculation with rhizobial strain 3HOq18 resulted in an increase in nodule number of more than four times as the uninoculated plants and was as effective as nitrogen fertilization. Nodulation by rhizobia strains isolated from nodules of Lathyrus odoratus or Lathyrus hirsutus were not more appreciable than by strains from Pisum spp. and were strongly inhibited by nitrogen fertilization. Nitrogen fixation reached its maximum at the age of maximum flowering and was inhibited by nitrogen fertilization.
