An outbreak of mastitis originally caused by the agent Nocardia asteroides was detected in a herd of Holstein Friesian cattle. Eighty four of the 200 cows that were in the farm became affected during a 12 month period (October 1981-82). Clinically a mastitis process, a decrease in milk production, a progressive loss of weight and a decrease in physical fitness were observed in every affected animal. Pathological studies on these animals revealed a granulomatous mastitis with the formation of necrotic areas and abscesses. Granulomes were also observed in liver, lung and kidney. Microbial tests on affected organs and on milk samples from affected individuals contributed to identify in every single case the agent Nocardia asteroides. Occasionally, C. pyogenes, E. coli, Staphylococcus spp. and Aeromonas hydrophila were also detected as secondary agents
