Weeds of Sorghum and Tef in Raya-Kobo Awraja-Welo Region
1993
Melaku Wale (IAR, Addis Abeba (Ethiopia))
Sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] and tef [Eragrostis tef (Zucc.) Trotter] are major crops of the Raya-Kobo Awraja. Next to drought, weeds are the second most important problem. A weed survey was carried out during 1988 crop season in four localities of the Awraja: Gobye, Kobo, Waja and Alamata. More than 50 different weed species were recorded and composition of the weed flora was more or less similar as in the Kobo Research Center. Commelina latifolia Corchorus trilocularis, C.olitorius had the highest densities on sorghum, and Echinochloa Colona, Cyperus rotundus, Gynandropsis gynandra, and Launea cornuta, were very much denser on tef fields.
