SPALNE: Its role and objectives

The paper examines some of the crucial problems in agricultural productivity and environmental protection, and the importance of soil and plant analytical data for the development of judicious management strategies for increased food production and planning. It also emphasizes the importance of coordination of soil testing activities in order to improve both the quality and quanity of analytical data, which was also the basic reason for the establishment of the Soil and Plant Analytical Laboratories Network of Ethiopia (SPALNE). It also outines the long-term and short-term objectives of the Network that need to be accomplished for optimum operation of viable soil testing and plant analysis laboratories capable of producing qualitative data for planning and management purposes for increased agricultural productivity in Ethiopia. Account is given on the progress made and problems encountered by SPALINE since its establishent. Future activities and recommendations which are considered to be essential for ensuring the success of the Network are also discussed.
