Productivity of Arsi Bale goat types under farmers' management condition: a case of Arsi Negelle

On farm monitoring of goats from the year 2000 to 2004 was conducted at Adami Tulu and Arsi Negelle weredas of East Shoa Zone with an objective to determine the current productive and reproductive performance of Arsi Bale goats. The study showed that the average prolificacy, parturition interval litter size are 121%, 8.07 months and 1.21 respectively. Among the total births, about 36.27% were twins and triplets. On farm growth performance assessment of Arsi Bale goats indicated that the average birth weight, weaning weight and pre-weaning growth rate were 2.28 kg, 8.39 kg and 72.21 g/day, respectively. Goats kept in the study area had shorter lactation length, yield and smaller average daily milk yield. The average daily milk yield, lactation length and lactation yield were 296.1 g/day, 83.4 days and 21.72 kg, respectively.
