Selected chemical and physical characteristics of soils of Adet research center and its testing sites in North-western Ethiopia.

Selected chemical and physical characteristics of soils of Adet Research Centre and its testing sites were studied in 1998. Two composite soil samples were collected from each site for each soil type at a depth of 0-20 and 20-40 cm. Collected samples were analyzed at Adet Agricultural Research Centers soils laboratory following standard laboratory procedures. Results of the soil analysis showed that soil pH (1:1, soil: water) ranged from 4.81 in Acrisols of Injibara to 6.03 in Vertisols of Bichena. Nitrogen content ranged from 0.08 to 0.47% and many of the sites were found to be deficient in nitrogen. Organic matter content ranged from 1.66 to 3.50%. The high C/N ration was an indicator of possible immobilization of nitrogen. Phosphorus content ranged from 1.35 to 9.50 ppm. Highest value of cation exchange capacity was found on. Verrtisols of Woreta (39.70 cmolckg-1) followed by similar soils of Bichena (35.65 cmolckg-1), and the lowest values from Nitosols of Adet (25.32 cmolckg-1), Finote Selam (28.35 cmolckg-1), and Mota (28.59 cmolckg-1). A similar trend was observed for exchangeable cations. The highest exchangeable acidity values were obtained from Acrisols of Injibara followed by Nitosols of Merawi and Finote Selam. Vertisols and Cambisols generally showed lower exchangeable acidity level. Soil texture analysis revealed that all the soils lie in texture classes between silty clay loam to clay. The differences observed in chemical and physical properties among soils of Adet Research Center and its testing sites indicate that researchers should give due consideration to the possible variation in results that might be obtained while executing a single experiment on multilocations.
