Over 500 individual samples of apple trees from 160 farms of the German part of Switzerland were taken to identify the infestation by red spider mites, scale insects, aphids, spanworms and other fruit damaging insects as well as the population of predacious mites. Each individual sample consists of 2 m of two- to three-year old wood. Three to six individual samples of different varieties were taken per unit. In general, the results for 1995 showed only slight differences compared to 1994. The winter egg density of the red spider mite remained on its low level and the population of predacious mites on its high level of 1994. A stabilisation could also be observed for the oyster-shell scales. For the spanworm and the leaf roller moths, however, a slightly increasing tendency was noticed. Visual controls in spring will show whether this trend can be confirmed.
