Substantial breeding progress is to be expected for perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.). Between 1993 and 1995 60 varieties of perennial ryegrass were tested at eight sites under Swiss conditions. The evaluated parameters were yielding and competing abilities, resistance to diseases, suitability for high altitudes, persistence, and digestible organic matter content. Based on the achieved results the following varieties are newly recommended: Early varieties: Anaconda, Arvicola, Aubisque, Cavia, Labrador, Lacerta, Respect. Late varieties: Elgon, Missouri, Pandora, Pastoral, Twins
