Stem Canker of Yew Trees (Taxus baccata L.) in the Fuerstenwald near Chur, Canton Grisons, Switzerland
Hassler, J(Amt fuer Wald Graubuenden, Chur (Switzerland)) | Schoch, W. | Engesser, R.
An important English yew population is located in the Fürstenwald. Every fourth yew manifests extensive stem canker. The paper describes yew population and the stem cankers, which are thought to be the result of a fungal infection. Some canker wounds are colonised by a basidiocarp of the Golden Spreading Polypore (Phellinus chrysoloma (Fr.) Donk). Similar stem cankers are found on the yews on the Uetliberg near Zurich. No basidiocarps of Phellinus chrysoloma were found there, but basidicarps of the parchment fungus Amylostereum laevigatum (Fr.) Boid. were sometimes present. Both of these fungi are considered to be pathogenic. Innoculation experiments are needed to determine whether these two fungi are able to induce stem cankers on yew.
