The correct way of managing forests is a crucial topic in the worldwide discussion about certification, which is mainly ongoing in the German and English speaking countries. The main initiatives are the Forest Stewardship Council FSC promoted by the environmental groups, and the ISO 14000 certification initiated by Canada. So far the FSC has accredited four certification bodies, and 54 forests covering approximately three million hectares have been certified. In Canada certification has started applying ISO 14000. In Switzerland environmental groups and timber trade have now been working on FSC certification standards for almost three years. Independent efforts to test certification according to ISO standards are being made jointly by the Forestry Association and a manufacturer. The original idea of certification is actually forest conservation. However, in Switzerland this is granted by the forest law. At best, certification leads to more biodiversity and closeness to nature. A high-priced market for certified timber products is likely to be established only in a few odd segments, whereas most probably, in particular cases, certification could become a condition for access to the market. Certification of the Swiss forest appears sensible only if the present high level of sutstainability is rewarded economically. It is advisable to follow actively the international discussion. Tests, certification processes using both the FSC and ISO approaches should be made possible. It will then be up to the market to decide whether or not this instrument is needed. The high level of sustainability in the Swiss forest management is constantly to be communicated
