Estimating Diurnal Patterns of Water Uptake by Plants from Detailed Measurement of Moisture and Temperature at Different Soil Depths | Estimación de patrones diarios de consumo de agua por las plantas, con base en mediciones detalladas de humedad y temperatura a diferentes profundidades de suelo

The technique presented in this paper integrates the mass balance equation over the soil layers to estimate the variation in soil moisture content in each layer resulting from the liquid water and vapour fluxes through the soil matrix. The matric potential and temperature gradients driving liquid water and vapour fluxes were estimated from continuous measurements of soil moisture using Theta-probes (Delta-T Devices, Cambridge) and ST1 (Delta-T Devices, Cambridge) temperature sensors. Soil specific calibrations of the instruments were required in order to measure the changes in soil moisture content. The procedure was validated in bare soil at two different sites with different soil and environmental conditions in the UK and Colombia. The hourly and cumulative estimated variation of soil moisture content was compared with measured values and significant correlations were found between them with r2 values ranging from 0.61 to 0.76 for the hourly estimations and 0.89 to 0.97 for the cumulative estimations. For vegetated soil, the mass balance equation was solved and used to determine the root water uptake/efflux. Diurnal patterns of water uptake/efflux were estimated for oil palm for two different sites and environmental conditions in Colombia. The estimated diurnal patterns were reproducible with an r2 value of 0.91. The technique presented provides a means to study how matric potentials in the soil affect water uptake rates. Reductions in daily root water uptake by oil palms from 5 mm day-1 to 2 mm day-1 were observed as consequence of reduction in soil moisture to -160 kPa at 5 cm depth reflecting the sensitivity of the oil palm to water stress. This technique opens up possibilities for gaining a better understanding of water dynamics in crop systems.

La técnica presentada en este trabajo integra la ecuación de balance de masas sobre diferentes estratos de suelo para estimar la variación en humedad en cada estrato, resultante de los flujos de agua, en forma líquida y en forma de vapor de agua a través de la matriz del suelo. Los gradientes de potencial matricial y temperatura que gobiernan los flujos de agua y vapor se estiman partiendo de mediciones continuas de humedad del suelo, para lo cual se utilizaron censores de humedad Theta-probes (Delta-T Devices, Cambridge) y censores de temperatura tipo ST1 (Delta-T Devices, Cambridge) . Calibraciones específicas de los censores fueron necesarias para cada suelo y profundidad. El procedimiento fue validado en suelo sin cultivo para dos lugares diferentes con condiciones de suelo y ambiente contrastantes en el Reino Unido y Colombia. Los valores estimados de la variación en el contenido de humedad, tanto horaria como acumulada, se comparan con valores medidos, encontrándose correlaciones altamente significativas con coeficiente r2 en rangos de 0,61 a 0,76 para la estimación de la variación horaria y 0,89 a 0,97 para la estimación de variación acumulada. Para suelos con vegetación, la ecuación de balance de masa fue resuelta en función del efecto que tienen las raíces del cultivo sobre la variación total en el contenido de humedad en cada estrato del suelo. De esta forma fue posible estimar patrones diarios de consumo / eflujo de agua por la palma de aceite en dos lugares con diferentes condiciones edafoclimáticas contrastantes en Colombia. La estimación de los patrones diarios de consumo /eflujo de agua por la palma fue reproducible con un r2 de 0,91. La técnica presentada abre nuevas posibilidades para un mejor entendimiento en la dinámica del agua en suelos cultivados.
