Phenotype variability of sugar beet genotypes inoculated with bacteria Azotobacter chroococcum

In this research there was studied the influence of inoculation of sugar beet seeds with Azotobacter chroococcum (strains: 16, 84, 86) on root yield and quality of a set of parents and their progeny. The influence of inoculation was tested in combination with the application of different doses of NPK. Also, soil microbial activity was examined in order to determine the soil biological activity. The inoculation with Azotobacter chroococcum significantly influenced the root yield, white sugar yield and sugar content in roots of the hybrids and parents. The influence of the inoculation was significantly affected by the interaction betweenn year, mineral nutrition and sugar beet genotype. The inoculation with Azotobacter chroococcum did not affect the content of potassium and sodium, but it significantly affected the content of alfa-amino N in root juice of the hybrids and their parents. The interaction year and mineral nutrition had the highest effect on the variation of alfa-amino N in root juice of the hybrids and parents. Low heritability was observed for all examined characteristics of the sugar beet genotype. No similarity among the hybrids and parents in effectiveness of association with nitrogen-fixing bacterium could be established for either characteristics and either mineral nutrition variant. These results indicate that breeding success cannot be predicted for the tested characteristics (root yield, contents of sugar, potassium, sodium and alfa-amino N, white sugar yield), i.e., it is not possible to evaluate genetic gain from breeding. The soil microbial activity, established on the basis of presence of microorganism groups and dehydrogenase activity, was significantly affected by the interaction between year, mineral nutrition, sugar beet genotype and inoculation.
