This PhD Thesis shows the results of the analysis of documents from the Historical Archives of Subotica (Serbia), Budapest (Hungary) and Esztergom (Hungary), various collections of technical documents from Subotica engineering firms, published papers and personal experience obtained during field research regarding the condition of Palic Lake surrounding. (Based on this data the Chronology of changes in the Palic Lake basin was produced. This material is held in the Library of Faculty of Civil Engineering in Subotica (Serbia), on two DVD-s. It included 600 pages of the main text and 2475 pages of appendices). Official data regarding the Palic Lake basin date back to late 17th century, while the earliest data, preserved in later citations, date from 15th and 16th century. From hydrological-hydraulical stand point, homogenous period of the Palic Lake basin represents a period of unchanged conditions of inflow and outflow of water from the basin. Analysis of construction work records revealed major hydrotechnic construction works that defined different homogenous periods of the basin. In total, 8 homogenous periods of the Palic Lake basin were determined. Surface waters have undergone changes during analyzed time periods. During each homogenous period a data related to definition of the basin boundaries was analyzed. Analysis of the surface water condition both on the urbanized and non-urbanized parts of the basin during homogenous periods was used to define locations of springs and stream paths, and locations and characteristics of still waters. Presentation of construction works performed on the Palic Lake lakebed was used to determine the level curve and changes in the volume of water within the lake during homogenous periods. An estimation of the basins boundary was based on altitude, geological and hydrographical characteristics of the Palic Lake surroundings and observations of changes in the ground water level in this area. Without considering the influence of precipitation changes within the basin a proposition was made regarding the system for observation of the water inflow and outflow from the lake. Criteria for determination of runoff observation network were analyzed in an effort to define water management of basins similar to the Palic lake basin.
