An investigation into the growth and cropping of plum trees, which were cultivated on heavy soil, was conducted for four years after planting (2005-2008). The experiment included plum cultivars Topfirst, Topfive, Topstar plus, Topgigant plus, Top 2000, Tophit plus, JoJo and Haganta, grafted on rootstock WaxWa, and planted at the distance 4.0 x 2.5 m (1000 trees/ha). Tree vigour expressed as trunk cross-sectional area of Topgigant, Top 2000 and Haganta was lower than of Topfirst and Topfive, whereas tree vigour of Topstar was higher and Tophit was the highest. In our growing conditions, among cultivars in the trial, Topfirst, Topfive, Jojo and Tophit showed good properties in view of ripening time, yield and fruit quality. Rootstock WaxWA looks as promising for modern, intensive plum growing at high density.
