The disposal site for drilling mud at Mokrin has come into being through the disposal of industrial waste and is an examole of so-called historical pollution. The drilling mud consists of a drilling fluid and the excavated material (cuttings) and is produced when oil and natural gas wells are drilled. The disposal site at Mokrin had been examined through detailed field and laboratory work and a soil restoration project proposal was put forward, after which soil remediation was performed at the site. As a result, a type of soil called deposol has formed at the location. This soil is alkaline, has a high concentration of sodium, and is burdened by an excess of total hydrocarbons. The groundwater at the site is of poor quality, highly saline and has a high sodium content. Over time, the whole area of the disposal site had become an illegal dumping ground for different kinds of refuse. By implementing the environmental remediation project at the site, the degraded soil has been successfully remediated and the site was forested.
