In this paper the impact of high temperature treatment on beech wood has been analyzed. Samples dimensioned to be 15 x 10 x 10 mm were divided into two groups: sapwood and false heartwood and after that treated at temperatures at 150 deg C, 170 deg C, 190 deg C and 210 deg C. Density, density loss and mass loss of wood were determined. The results indicate that the greatest density and mass losses were identified at the temperature of 210 deg C. Thermal wood processing at temperatures of 150 deg C and 170 deg C does not affect the change in the examined factors and has no significance in terms of thermal modifications. At a temperature of 190 deg C there is a considerable mass loss, whereas density loss is minor. Hence it can be concluded that the above mentioned temperature causes such changes in wood which could enhance its biological durability and on the other hand not diminish mechanical properties of wood to a large extent. Also, at the above mentioned temperature there is no considerable difference in the density of sapwood and heartwood which could contribute to the increase in the scope of usage of the wood of false heartwood.
