The analysis presented in the paper aims at describing the advantages of geothermal energy which is used for heating. A special emphasis is laid on the efficiency of geothermal heating, i.e. the amount of electrical energy used this way is less than by standard heating systems. Also, there are many other advantages such as: geothermal energy is a renewable source of energy, geothermal heating is an environment-friendly form of heating, heat pumps can be used for cooling as well, and the maintenance of the system is cheap. Geothermal steam compression heat pump represents one of the ways for using the energy of the bodies having relatively low temperatures (surrounding air, seawater, underground water, ground) in order to produce thermal energy. The heat source for a heat pump is underground water with small temperature oscillations. The heat pump analyzed in this paper operates with cooling fluid R 407C which is a standard fluid in the field of heating and air conditioning. The combination of modern heating installation and heat pump is expected to significantly reduce the heating costs.
