The term of sustainable development is being introduced in all areas of human life taking into account all limitation of the Earth we live on (increasing population, limited natural resources and unequal development of certain countries...). Survival of the man on the planet directly depends on resources necessary for prolongation of its species. Special term sustainable use refers to general guidelines of man's influence during resources exploitation. Sustainable use represents using of components of biological diversity which does not cause disturbance of biodiversity, but represent rational use of natural goods and maintenance of the exact degree of biodiversity potential that satisfies needs of contemporary and future generations. Water systems are still being degraded which jeopardizes many of their functions including sustainability of food supplying and biodiversity. Fresh water accessibility and use as well as natural resources preservation are essential for human welfare. Quantity and quality of surface and ground water resources and functioning of the most important ecosystems are imperiled by increasing population, migrations of people from villages to towns and growth of raw materials exploitation as well as by climatic changes. The area of water management based on principles of sustainable development represents important segment of the process of European integrations of the Republic of Serbia. The current state of water management in the Republic of Serbia is characterized by traditional approach to water management with certain elements of integral approach. Water management as a complex set of measures and activities should provide necessary quantities of water whose quality is suitable for different purposes, to ensure water pollution protection, regulation of watercourses and other waters and protection of harmful water effects. Sustainable water management has to comprise planning and implementation and control of executed plans. Constant challenge for water management is to achieve balance between environmental needs and development. For this it is necessary to make mutual efforts in the area of technology, and both legal and institutional frame. Condition of water management is a consequence of various factors that were effective during certain period of time. The future demands that several steps should be taken referring to measures which should ensure improvement of institutional status and financial condition of water management. Integral water management sets out new goals, principles and standards while creating new policy and special surrounding for its application. Water as a renewable resource has increasing consumption tendency since it is at the same time irreplaceable provision, raw material, working tool and general object of work. In order to preserve water resources and stand against process which constantly increases problems in the field of water management, the man is forced to make continuous efforts in building and maintaining systems for water protection. It is obvious that the concept of sustainable development is possible only when it is based on premise of achieving strategy of economic development and environmental protection policy.
