Food safety in the EU and the role of EFSA
2012
Hugas, Marta (European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), Parma ( Italy))
Risk analysis is considered at the international level a fundamental instrument for supporting the decision-making process in the field of food safety and for developing better risk regulation. As the scientific component of risk analysis, risk assessment is used to evaluate the public health impact associated with a specific hazard in a food; to identify the most important risk factors and to highlight gaps or insufficient knowledge of the food-chain. In the European Union, EFSA is the institutional body responsible for conducting risk assessment and supporting European risk managers, mainly European Commission, European Parliament and EU Members States.
