The more stringent criteria with regard to the treatment of waste water leads to rapid development and application of technological innovation in the field of technology for wastewater treatment. The barriers in the application are often the perception of new technologies in an environment where they are implemented, with all challenges and modern equipment, but also the costs that accompany the introduction of new technologies. The membrane processes in wastewater treatment belong to the modern technology that gets a significant role during the last decade, especially due to the growing problem of a lack of drinking water and more stringent requirements in terms of effluent quality, and the need to reduce the size of the devices that are increasingly located near the source / village or in the village. The membrane processes, which usage dates back from 1960.from the beginning were accompanied by extremely high capital costs due to the high cost of membranes and accessories. That's mostly been the main cause of the slower acceptance of this technology by end users. Enhanced development of membrane research and experience with the device in operation have enabled the application of new and better membranes with their longer life while dramatically reducing the price of the total costs . This paper presents the development and application of MBR technology with emphasis on the research results and the current status and trends in the application of MBR technology in the world.
