The extensive use of antimicrobials in human and veterinary medicine in recent years has accelerated the emergence and spread of resistant microorganisms. This situation has been worsened by the lack of investment in developing new effective antibiotics, which has a serious consequence of increasing the number of infections caused by resistant strains of microorganisms. Resistance to antimicrobial drugs (antimicrobial resistance - AMR) has therefore become a priority both at the European and global level. The European Commission adopted a series of strategic documents for the fight against AMR, as well as recommendations for the responsible use of antimicrobial drugs, and a categorization of antimicrobial drugs used in animals. Recommendations for the responsible use of antimicrobial drugs, especially antibiotics, is a document designed to provide practical guidance on the development and implementation of strategies to promote the responsible use of these drugs in veterinary medicine. The risk increases if such antimicrobials are used inappropriately, for example, in an inappropriate manner (eg. mass or drug use on non-susceptible microorganisms), in insufficient doses, repeatedly or for inappropriate periods of time. The responsible use of antibiotics should lead to a more rational and targeted use, thereby increasing the therapeutic effect and reducing the development of AMR, with the ultimate outcome of responsible use being a total reduction in the use of antimicrobial drugs, mainly by limiting their use only to situations in which they are necessary and based on the best practice ie. based on clinical diagnosis and, whenever possible, on the results of microbiological sensitivity tests and using an antimicrobial agent with as narrow a spectrum as possible. The Expert Group (AMEG) of the European Medicines Agency have adopted a list of antibiotics categorized into four groups, taking into account the risk that their use in animals poses to public health, such as antibiotic resistance, and the need to use them in veterinary medicines. The list covers all classes of antibiotics that are classified into four categories A to D, which are Avoid, Restrict, Caution and Prudence.
