Overcoming of methyl bromide phytotoxic effect on grape planting material disinfected against phylloxera

The disinfection of grape planting material with methyl bromide early in the spring and late in the fall for the control of the diapausing phylloxera reduced the plant adaptability by 25-50%. To overcome the phytotoxic effect of the disinfection, the rates of methyl bromide mixed with carbon dioxide were reduced by 40-50% and tested on nursery plants of Rkatsiteli and Shasla belaya grape varieties. At the tested rates, the mixture totally controlled the pest, causing a lesser negative effect on the plant adaptability. Pure methyl bromide showed no effect on the carbohydrates' metabolism and reduced the water content of plant tissues. Therefore, its use in the mixture with carbon dioxide and the saturation of plant tissues by means of 24-h long wetting of the planting material before fumigation can be considered as the optimal variant of grape disinfection
