Patterns of branching in the aegilops and wheats (Poaceae)
1995
Kozlechkov, G.A.
The formation of the shoot system in aegilopses and wheat has been investigated. After germination the growth of the shoot is reflected by irreversible naturally determined sequence of its morphophases; 0-cl, cl-1, cl-2, 1-1, 1-2, 2-1, 2-2, 3-1, 3-2... (where cl is the coleoptile and the figures in the left position are the number of leaves fully expanded, whereas the figures in the right are the number of leaves which still grow). The time of initiation of the lateral shoot is the function of the age of its parental shoot. In wild wheats and aegilopses the moment of initiation of the next lateral shoot is confined to the odd morphophases of the lateral shoot proceeds according to the patterns of branching of the main shoot. The regular increase of the number of orders of shoots and the number of shoots in each order-associated with the increasing number of odd morphophases of the main shoot is reflected by algorythm of the numeric Pascal's triangle. In cultivated wheats the moment of the initiation of the lateral shoot is confined to the even morphophases of its parental shoot (1-2, 2-2, 3-2 and so on). This type of branching is the derivative of branching type in wild species
