The harmfulness and biological specifities of Pyricularia oryzae as well as the symptoms of rice pyriculariose have been described. The results of long-term activities and the breeding for the races-specific and field resistance have been cited. The selected samples from the world rice collection, possessing effective genes of resistance to P.oryzae (Pi-z, Pi-ta sup(2), Pi-z) were involved in the development of some hybrid populations. On the basis of these hybrids and by the selection against a severe infection background, the field-resistant cultivar Pavlovsky, the immune cultivar Paritet, and the highly tolerant cultivar Slavyanets were obtained
