A molecular genetic investigation was conducted to study the pathological material collected from chickens and geese in backyards during the 2007 outbreak of avian influenza (AI) in the Krasnodar Krai and in the Republic of Adygeya in January-February. The investigation has detected and characterized AI virus isolates, subtype H5N1 belonging to the same genetic group of strains from South-Eastern Asia. There has been found an amino acid sequence of hemagglutinin protein clevage site of the studied isolates - PQGRERRRKKR*GLF illustrating high pathogenicity of AI viruses. The nucleotide sequences (394 n.p.) actually turned to be identical. The differences between them were 1-2 nucleotide replacements. A phylogenetic analysis of a a fragment of hemagglutinin gene analysis helped to find the belonging of the studied isolates to the genetic line A/Goose/Goangdong/1/96 of AI strains from South-Eastern Asia. In molecular genetic properties they actually did not differ from the AI virus isolated in the regions of the South Federal District in 2006 winter and spring.
