Age dynamics in number of antibodies against leucosis virus in calves born from seropositive cows

The age dynamics in numbers of colostral and post-infection antibodies in blood of calves born from mothers infected by bovine leucosis virus (BLV) in the Ivanovo and Vladimir Regions unsafe for this disease. It was established that in most of not infected calves colostral antibodies to BLV disappeared in 5 months after birth. In others they can persist until the age of 9-11 months. In calves infected with BLV prenatally and postnatally the number of antibodies retains high throughout the first year of life, provided that they received in due time mother first milk. In no first milk calves antibodies to BLV are detected in EIA at 2-3-month old age. After that until 6 months their continuing increase is observed. This proves the vertical (prenatal) method of transmission of infection to these calves and confirms a possibility for natural infection of a fetus with BLV during intrauterine development. For early diagnosis of leucosis in calves it is recommended to investigate pair samples of blood serum taken with an interval of 2-3 weeks from 4-month-old animals. A pronounced increase in the number of antibodies or equally high in such 2 samples will testify infectivity of calves with BLV
