English. Condition of the material and technical base of machine and tractor stations (MTS) before the beginning of the Great Patriotic War was under study. It is concluded that before the war outdated equipment amounted to more than 90% of all fleet of tractors employed in the agriculture of the Ural. There was a disproportion between the actual trailer inventory and the number of tractors; the infrastructure for storage and repair of machinery, fuels and lubricants was not established. Under conditions of war time deliveries of new equipment and spare parts were stopped, supplies of fuel were reduced and the main part of machine operators was called up to the front. The reduction of MTS work in the kolkhoz fields during the war put the highly mechanized Ural agriculture in a very difficult situation. Reduction of mechanization was impossible to compensate. The system of measures for the conservation of MTS equipment in working condition was taken. Groups of qualified workers and engineers were assigned to the kolkhozes to support tractor maintenance and to restore spare parts. Unfortunately, spare part renovation did not bring the expected results, but the patronage of the factories assisted towards the acceleration and quality improvement of the repair works. The presence of well-developed industry in the region partially solved the spare parts problem, and allowed to assign workers to kholkhozes to assist with machinery reparations. The peculiarity of the war years was the downsizing of the MTS. MTS of smaller size could focus on the underprivileged agricultural artels. At the end of the war increased supplies of fuel and lubricants to the agricultural sector, resumption of deliveries of new machinery, strengthening of the repair base, enlargement of the MTS network and improvement of the mechanics' qualifications led to an increase of volume and quality improvement of MTS tractor works. Beginning with 1944, the volume of tractor works conducted by the MTS began to increase steadily.
