Some changes in wood due to mechanical wounds in beech (Fagus sylvatica L.)

Reactions in wood after deep and shallow wounding were investigated. After the shallow wounding on the exposed surface a highly effective protection wood was formed which effectivelly prevented further rapid tissue dehydration and aeration. The consequences of the deep wounds were much greater than those of the shallow ones.
