The difference between breeding values for milk production and realized milk production was analysed on the herd level basis. Herds in which more than one breed was present were divided according to the number of different breeds in herd. A total of 72,498 cows from 7,622 herds were included in the study. Distinctive differences were observed between herds with similar breeding values in milk production. According to our opinion the differences might be caused by differences in the breeding systems between herds. We propose that the difference between breeding values and milk production should be taken into account when steps for higher milk production on the herd basis are planned. On the one hand, the improvement in farm management is a reasonable step for herds which do not use the genetic potential of their cows well. On the other hand, cows with high breeding values should be selected in herds which use the genetic potential of cows well parallel to improvements in the farm management as well. Procedures about the use of genetic potential through the web portal Govedo on the herd level basis are also presented.
