The striped bark beetle Xyloterus lineatus Ol. (Col., Scolytidae) - economically important pest of softwood timber
1995
Babuder, G. | Pohleven, F. (Ljubljana Univ. (Slovenia). Biotechnical Fac., Wood Science and Technology Dept.)
The paper deals with the biology, bioecology and economic significance of the striped bark beetle Xyloterus lineatus Ol. It is this beetle which, among the xylocetophagous scolytids colonizing the sapwood of softwoods, causes the greatest damage to softwoods in Slovenia. In order to prepare effective timber protection programmes, it is, apart from the principles of operation of synthetic aggregation pheromones in the biotechnical protection of wood, also necessary to know the mechanism of colonization of this bark beetle in the timber. This process occurs in several stages: swarming, timber selection, concentration of individuals in the timber, and the generation of offspring. The paper also presents the results of investigations carried out into the symbiosis of the striped bark beetle with certain fungi.
