The variability of some craniometric characteristics of red deer in some regions of Slovakia

Some skull measurements of 10-year old and older stags from several regions of Slovakia were compared. The gene pool of red deer was judged on the basis of the differences in total length and maximal width of the skull among examined populations and subspecies of the red deer (Cervus elaphus hippelaphus) and the red deer (Cervus elaphus montanus) described by Balis (1980). Stags from the Slanske hills formed a special population as they had the greatest mean length of skull (452.2 mm, Tab. 1, Fig. 1). The difference between them and the stags from the other observed regions of Slovakia (Fig. 2) with regard to mentioned length is also statistically significant. But they too fall behind the total length of the skull of Cervus elaphus montanus (477 mm, Balis 1980) statistically significantly. Total length of the skull of Cervus elaphus hippelaphus (410.3 mm, Balis 1980) was statistically significantly exceeded by the stags from all observed regions, which is valid also in the case of the testing of maximal skull width (Fig. 3)
