Embryogenic and non-embryogenic calli of European black pine (Pinus nigra ARN.) were tested for defense reactions to the fungus Phaeolus schweinitzii (FR.) PAT. Embryogenic callus lines initiated from immature zygotic embryos and consisting of suspensor-like cells and embryos in early developmental stages were in previous work shown to have weak defense reactions. Non-embryogenic lines derived from mature zygotic embryos had remarkable defense reactions. Results suggest that the constitutive defense system is already formed during embryo development.
